about

Flowers in the Dark is the third album by the Cane Toads.
The Cane Toads’ dirty blues and roots music has been part of the landscape of North Wales since 1988. They have had the same line up of David Hopewell (vocals and guitar), Humph Davies (bass) and Pete Walton (drums) throughout. They have recorded two previous albums, Horrid Din and The Roadkill Tapes.
The Cane Toads’ first love has always been live music, and they have performed hundreds of gigs ranging from festivals and support spots for big names, to impromptu sessions in people’s living rooms and garages. Over the years they have built up a huge repertoire including many self-penned songs that have become live favourites. Many of these Cane Toads originals remained unrecorded and unreleased.
Gigging was brought to a grinding halt by Covid in 2020. The Cane Toads were undeterred and played a series of online concerts. They also decided it would be a good opportunity to record a studio album while under lockdown conditions. Their previous releases had been recorded live, either in venues or the studio, and had by necessity stuck to the stripped-down 3-piece sound. The new album Flowers in the Dark was a chance to expand this approach and allow the band to play other instruments, try out new ideas and record their unreleased songs.
Flowers in the Dark retains the spark of the Cane Toads’ live performances but adds many unexpected elements. There are nods to psychedelia with lush Mellotron arrangements, a couple of excursions into dreamy electronica, and a classy horn section courtesy of guest musician Neil Browning. There are of course several raucous rockers in traditional Cane Toads fashion.
