about

Normal Shed Uses approached Tact Salon by downloading 220 chords from a muso website and printing them out. They then cut them all out individually and put them into a hat. It was decided that no chord would be used more than once and that all the songs would be (roughly) one minute long. They figured out that a classic length 40 minute album could be made up from four sets of ten songs, each comprised of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 chords without repeating a chord. The chords for each song were drawn from the hat and subsequently discarded, as was the tempo and time signature of each song.

Scott started by laying down guitar tracks for each track, followed by Alan’s Fender Rhodes piano. They then both added various other instruments - sax, trumpet, flute etc...

The finished result unsurprisingly sounded like jazz, confirming the duo’s suspicion of how jazz musicians work. Although they did actually perform the entire album live with vocals, they decided to release it as an instrumental album, allowing the listener to improvise their own lyrics over it.
